It wasn't until my sophomore year of college, when I started dating someone who had spent their whole life in Baltimore City, that I began exploring it in a whole new way. So of course, or you can imagine if they're selecting the books themselves, it makes a big difference as to whether or not they're going to read them. I did a painting recently that took me a few days, and I had one that's the same size that I've been just trying to get it right for about a year, but sometimes that's cause I'm just putting it aside, because I can't look at it for awhile. While I'm proud to be from Baltimore, the city does have some significant challenges – some of which have played out in recent news stories. And it was so prevalent. When I was younger I would do it too. And when I saw the kids — because I was already looking for a project because I graduated from NYU in photography — I was looking for a project, and there it is.

It's just, to me, all the problems that I think we're facing is that, I think, the community is just breaking down. How would you say that living in that city affected your body of work during college or following your graduation? I'm not sure how that one happened. I've had a couple of projects in Baltimore that I could never really pull off in the pandemic. This book holds a special place in my heart because most of it is shot on Ramona Avenue, a street in Northeast Baltimore's Belair-Edison neighborhood. This is me trying to respectfully honor that style and aesthetic. And that's what we wanted to do as well. And I'm seeing all these people just meandering.

And that's sort of what started Tha Bloc — watching people just literally flee.
