In October 2015, a massive rainstorm caused devastating flooding across the park, creating extensive mudflows in some areas. Rainbow Canyon provides a wonderful spot to watch and photograph military pilots traversing the canyon and flying by, sometimes just a few hundred feet away. They are still there today as well as the trails created when they were dragged across the desert floor. There is a technique to eliminate that flare that I described in this post here. If you're lucky enough to have the wind blowing the sand, be sure to take good tight goggles with you to protect your eyes. We stayed three days last year, searching the valley high and low (actually, just low) but could not find mud flats that looked remotely the same. Equally visually fascinating are the Death Valley photographs of the Mesquite Sand Dunes with the early morning sunrise shadows or photographs of the Mesquite Sand Dunes with their dramatic curves and soft ripples of sand. So are photographs of Death Valley truly worthy of being called fine art photography? I would assume you envision a barren desert landscape, lacking color, and crawling with undesirable critters such as rattlesnakes. There is also a little hidden spot within Death Valley at which using a telephoto lens is a lot of fun- that is, if you're interested in military jets!
