It didn't take too long before we happened upon some nice sections of these concave shaped mud cracks. For just a shot distance and you will find mud cracks on both sides of the road. Mining would continue to go on in Death Valley for decades to come. So you may wonder … why would the landscape of Death Valley make a subject matter for fine art photography? However, the best thing is to just walk with an open mind and look for interesting formations and how the light travels through the crevices inside these canyons. But don't just throw on the wide-angle and shoot from waist high. To get the first image I added a 4 stop neutral grad filter on the lens to reduce the sky value. The aesthetic quality of mud tiles transforms with each season until another flood event creates new mud tiles. On a whim, we decided to visit Death Valley again for three more nights with a goal to locate and photograph the elusive mud flats.

With over 5, 200 square miles of landscape to be explored, it takes time, patience, effort, and a knowledge of the best times to go, in order to give yourself the best opportunity of walking away with some incredible shots. Grand Landscapes are certainly some of my favorite scenes to photograph. Finally, I spent time adjusting some of the tones in the sky, both to add drama and to balance the natural lighting in the scene. Home to towering sand dunes, hexagonal shaped salt flats, mysterious 'sailing' rocks, colorful mountains, and arid valleys full of gigantic mud cracks, the photographic possibilities are endless. An unexpected setback had led to a lot of major changes in my plans a couple of years ago. I found this little tree sticking out of the cracks on the east side of the road with the beautiful mountains in the back drop. Whereas Zabriskie faces away from the sun, Aguereberry Point looks directly at it creating a more dazzling display of colors and light to usher in the day. I'd recommend renting a 4WD vehicle but you'll be able to see plenty of amazing things without one. This is a place full of giant boulders and arches, backdropped by the Sierra Nevada mountains. Mud Cracks Death Valley
In October 2015, a massive rainstorm caused devastating flooding across the park, creating extensive mudflows in some areas. Rainbow Canyon provides a wonderful spot to watch and photograph military pilots traversing the canyon and flying by, sometimes just a few hundred feet away. They are still there today as well as the trails created when they were dragged across the desert floor. There is a technique to eliminate that flare that I described in this post here. If you're lucky enough to have the wind blowing the sand, be sure to take good tight goggles with you to protect your eyes. You can see other photos from our trip here (each photo links out to different parts of the park). Temperatures can be 20 or more degrees different from what visitors find at Badwater Basin. The next "est" – Death Valley is the home of the lowest elevation in North America which is found at Badwater Basin (282 feet below sea level). These floods carry mud which undergoes a cycle of drying, cracking, and crumbling. Upon leaving the valley one of them referred to it as Death Valley and the name stuck.

We stayed three days last year, searching the valley high and low (actually, just low) but could not find mud flats that looked remotely the same. Equally visually fascinating are the Death Valley photographs of the Mesquite Sand Dunes with the early morning sunrise shadows or photographs of the Mesquite Sand Dunes with their dramatic curves and soft ripples of sand. So are photographs of Death Valley truly worthy of being called fine art photography? I would assume you envision a barren desert landscape, lacking color, and crawling with undesirable critters such as rattlesnakes. There is also a little hidden spot within Death Valley at which using a telephoto lens is a lot of fun- that is, if you're interested in military jets! This is an extremely hard place to find unless you know someone who knows someone who has spent months scouting this location and can tell how to get here based on GPS coordinates. If you've got a few days then I highly recommend adding Ibex Dunes to your list of things to do in Death Valley National Park.This hike is a short and cool jaunt winding through marble canyon with some fairly narrow passageways. 300 miles are paved, 300 are improved, and the rest are 4WD roads. Badwater Basin is the lowest place in the United States at 282 feet below sea level. This means that, for the most part, you're going to be doing the research on foot. The reflection from the salt gives you double the sun exposure. This mirroring is another element that helps bring cohesion to this composition. Also, wear lots of sunblock! When the sun got close to the mountains I started making exposures. If anybody ever read Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard, they will never forget the line, "I cannot cause light; the most I can do is try to put myself in the path of its beam. But what makes this dune field even more impressive is the jaw-dropping backdrop of the colossal Last Chance Mountains.
