Colby's book, All the Roads Between, right along with Emiline. It just felt very unrealistic and forced. I loved the title, the premise of this book and even the simple, yet meaningful cover. The was so much resentment, hurt, and shame from her upbringing and the events that led to her leaving her small town for good. I was provided a review copy; this did not influence my opinion of the book. Opposites in every way, but that didn't matter. People, don't have any doubts, read this book! There was something so beautiful about it. We NEVER get any time with them as an adult couple, and after all that angst we needed some type of a good ending! When Emiline reads J. Colby's bestselling debut book, she is entranced with the story of Emerson and Jackson. Even with all of the dark spots in their lives, it was quite simply, beautiful. I loved how he there, just waiting for her to catch up. I continued to read Ms. Carino and each time she has touched me. My heart cannot handle what i just read. The writing was exquisite, the characters were brilliantly crafted and the plot was solid. Neither did I connected with the characters as adults, nor did I felt the tension of that ending.
To be honest I just skimmed the blurb, I picked out words here and there and just went for it. To be a Top Pick of the Year. Not only did I have a hard time connecting with Emi and her decisions, I also had a hard time connecting with Jase. I tried to have empathy due to her troubled childhood but there is a point where you have to be polite and own your life.
It's one of those stories that will stay with you and imprint on your heart. Overall Opinion: This is a really tough one for me to rate. I'll love you forever. Reading the events of Emiline's childhood wasn't always easy. Everything felt lighter, like the planet had been catapulted into the cosmos and we were spinning freely through space and time. Despite growing up with a supportive and loving dad under difficult circumstances in the less affluent part of town, he has raised his daughter to be kind, loyal, and loving, Lark lives with abandonment issues and a fear of straying off the path she is working so hard to stay on. Carlino's sixth novel is a twofer: a book within a book—a fascinating mix of past and present, childhood and adulthood—that takes us back and forth in time and leaves us at the edge of the future. That alone made the book so appealing to me. While they fight their mutual attraction, their hope that "maybe someday" they can be together playfully comes out in their music. I think in any other story I probably would have been jonesing for Em to hurry up and finish the book, but that wasn't the case this time. The way in which it's written is truly beautiful and the characters have such depth in this second-chance love story, spanning years.
In addition, Em's indecisive post-reunion actions, the dubious "love-triangle" with Trevor-the-boyfriend (who, IMO, was just filler) and, Em's slow paced read (despite everyone telling her to just finish the book already) of Jax's book, were so unbelievable that I was not in the least interested about their HEA. You felt... thought... has taken it from aiming it as a work of fiction for their own... Beautifully and powerfully written, Renee Carlino, captured the essence of pain and struggle and wrapped them up in one of the most original stories I've ever read. They were both such wonderful characters.
Their relationship survives solely off of their past and their childhood. It captures young love as it grows from a friendship into something so much deeper. I am in complete love with Jase & Emi!! Carlino didn't just write an ordinary love story but she wrote a story that had meaning, depth, beauty, pain, friendship, and love. This book was a journey where the past and present collide. Within pages of the book, Emiline realizes the story is following her own childhood. Every time I was in the past, I had to know what was going to happen in the present.
