"Humanoids from the Deep" is an unbelievably entertaining gorefest! Wade and his daughter's environmentalist boyfriend (who of course Wade doesn't like) team up to track the monsters down. This is an entertaining film, to be sure, but these influences, in their clarity, amplify this film's derivation, framing its unmet potential as a more singular monster movie. But perhaps this is the sort of film that is endorsed by mentions of its offenses, and the scene in question notwithstanding - its constructional resemblance to Jaws also notwithstanding - there remain aspects of the film that merit recommendation. The worst part is you get the feeling from the way the story plays out that the carnival scenes are only there because there was free footage to use!

Not to be outdone, the head of Canco attempts to one up them on the tedious scale by taunting the protesters by pissing in the ocean. Johnny regularly calls on others, including Jim Hill (Doug McClure) who is sane but disagrees with Johnny, and the aforementioned Hank Slattery who is a raging racist about everything to discuss the issue, but rarely gets much traction. The film really benefits from the presence of veteran actor Robert Miano (lots of cop dramas and mob movies… notably Donnie Brasco). Plot: alien life-form, body horror, dismemberment, secret laboratory, alien creature, explorer, scientific research, research, genetic mutation, struggle for survival, survival, mutant... 5K. Not helping matters much is local fisherman and crank Hank Slattery (Vic Morrow, who began his career playing angry, psychotic young men and ended it playing angry, racist old men). However, the lack of a supplement upgrade leaves a bit to be desired. The tools are the same, namely jump scare noises, horror music stings, and buckets of slime. But the sharktopus escapes and terrorizes the beaches of Puerto Vallarta. And they shamble so slowly that only beach-goers with minimal foot speed have anything to worry about. But first, there is an awkward charm offensive, with Russel hypnotically pacifying the gullible big Petri fairly easily. The two rape scenes in Humanoids From The Deep, though distasteful, last about five seconds each so I really don't see what the problem was [and this is coming from someone who often finds the portrayal of rape in cinema very morally questionable]. And that's a positive comment. He plays Russel with both charm and menace. The filmmakers were making a serious ecological horror film and Corman retroactively tried to turn it into the self-aware exploitation romp that it should've been all along.

Don't be fooled, however, because this is an authentic Roger Corman production and definitely one of the most entertaining ones he ever was involved in. In all fairness, Humanoids from the Deep is a worthy, yet thoroughly sleazy, piece of horror and suspense cinema from an era in which most low budget entities were primarily concerned with the amount of boobs and blood on the screen, and for that, we should all be thankful. Plot: monster, teleportation, cocoon, body horror, creature feature, mutant, transformation, mad scientist, laboratory, insect, genetic engineering, violence... Time: 20th century, 80s. As a result, the film is also rather predictable. They are, and much of the beach community are in-bred deep ones, people with fish genetics and a desire to summon Dagon, a malevolent god of the sea. It's not really an especially good film, but it succeeds it what it sets out to do, and is typical of the many films that Roger Corman either directed or produced [he's not actually credited on this one, but he executively produced it and certainly made many of the creative decisions] in that a lot was achieved with very little. Another one of the many successful folk who started their careers in Corman pictures, his eerie, often dissonant and musically quite complex scores for films like this, are to me often more interesting than his later Hollywood work. The high pitched squealing they do can get a bit much to have to listen too but it's positively music to the ears compared to the screaming that occurs during the festival attack. After completion, Corman asked director Barbara Peeters to reshoot certain scenes including two monster rape scenes which were initially only shown in shadow. He has a fantastic cold stare and gives real gravitas to a film that might otherwise feel a little light. The salmon escaped from the laboratory facilities into the ocean during a storm, and were then eaten by other larger fish that proceeded to mutate into the brutal and depraved humanoids that have begun to terrorize the village. For a movie titled the Deep Ones, they didn't really give us the Deep Ones in all their aquatic glory. That's the extra level of ickiness not featured in your standard Sea Monster Horror movies. Swapping out the Native American angle for the routine and vague "save the environment" is the movie's first misstep. Story: The concept is based on a true story concerning an exotic species of eels that are released in the southeast from Asia. It will likely be on the film circuit for a while longer and does not yet have a streaming distribution, but when it does we will note it here.

I'm sure the producers of this film would be proud to be associated with those iconic Lovecraft influenced films. After this early experience in genre filmmaking, Hurd went on to produce such action spectacles as Aliens, The Terminator, and Armageddon. Style: scary, semi serious, bleak, suspenseful, psychotronic... But he still has a carnival barker's understanding of how to tap into the alligator brain that fans of exploitation films love.
