I absolutely loved this book, and I can't recommend it enough! While the main character that readers are learning about is that of Hirard Coldheart, or the Unknown Warrior (just to name a few). It is almost nonexistent. It's a bit of a slow burn, but tensions are kept high while new questions kept rolling in. Luckily, the skilled archer and Norse-Irish princess Affreca saves him.
Dawnthief delivers all of those in spades. The plot line in this was filled with adventure, with the usual fantasy-quest plot but with enough elements with in to keep it interesting and distinguish it from other books in this genre. There was a bit trickery and star-crossed lovers having in the romance department. They have successfully cornered one of the colleges of magic in a corner and have trapped those powerful mages inside the tower with no way out. The novel starts with them defending a castle from attack and in Barclay's trademark style, we are only on page six when one of our group of seven heroes, a warrior called Ras, is brutally slain. This is what sucked me in as a teenager as it made the book exciting - characters die unexpectedly at a rate at times comparable to 'attack on titan' and while this is effective in creating tension it also gets a bit ridiculous.
