I think the way that the author is able to portray this suspense is key to the story. The Taking Of Annie Thorne has the chilling haunting Eco of The Chalk Man it takes you grips you holds you tight until you are breathless with fear and shock! It's difficult not to talk about C. Tudor's work without mentioning the obvious influence that Stephen King has on her work. Very much like Stephen King, and I mean that in a complementary way! The Taking of Annie Thorne is a dark and sinister thriller that builds the suspense until the dramatic and surprising conclusion. A fantastic, well-written eerily, creepy, riveting second novel from this author, what more can I say. This is a novel that defies genre boundaries – is it crime? The story slowly unfolds through a series of flashbacks, slowly revealing all we need to know to understand why Joe has returned. I really wanted to give this book a five star rating, however, I found this too much like The Chalk Man; the flawed main character returning to his home town after events from his childhood start to happen again, a depressed atmosphere of the town, tension between childhood friends, a feeling of the supernatural. Not because it has any big horror/scary scenes, but because you are left on edge waiting for something to happen, something you can feel coming and if it's crawling on your skin yet you can't put the book down. As the book goes on, the reader learns about Joe's little sister Annie, who disappeared, then came back different. It's for this reason that I wanted to pick this latest book up, and I'm glad I did.

Set in Nottingham (my birthplace), the perfect setting for a horror story, because the scars of industry, particularly collieries, are still visible and relevant in these villages, even when the green hills hide the spoil tips and the pit wheels have flower planters around them. I devoured The Taking of Annie Thorne in one sitting, it had me totally hooked from page one and did not let up, this is the 2nd book I have read from CJ Tudor and I'm thirsty for the next!!! What he is, however, is a compelling character who is ably assisted in both timelines by a stellar cast of supporting characters that drive the story forward as the mystery deepens. The writing was brilliant; Tudor knows how to capture an audience and how to keep them flipping the page. This is tense, the sort of tense that makes you afraid to turn the pages. It offers an opportunity for Joseph Thorne to flee from serious gambling debts and apply for the teaching post - in the village where he spent his formative years. I think this is the best book I have read for a while and strongly recommend it if you like a twisty, creepy tale. Brilliantly unsettling, and rich with horror, it is great to see C. Tudor grapple with more supernatural elements in her writing and she proves herself not to be a one-trick pony, and a wonderful new talent in British Horror Fiction. I liked him from the first page.
