George Bellairs was the nom de plume of Harold Blundell (1902-1985), a crime writer and bank manager born in Heywood, near Rochdale, Lancashire, who settled in the Isle of Man on retirement. George Bellairs' particular attention to detail, character development and mastery of weaving a complex and intriguing plot are evident, once again. George Bellairs has a wonderful way of portraying the personality traits of his characters - and this book has him at his best. Yet another police procedural. I have to confess that as an avid, impatient, and fast reader, I tend to skip long passages of narrative. Starts with a huge banquet not something you can get in war years.

It combines a twisty, well plotted mystery, with excellent character development and a good sense of time and place. Heartland book series. The Dog Lovers' Guides. Most also feature Inspector Andrew McMorran and some of the later books also include Helen Repton, a reasonably rare occurrence in books at that time, namely a female member of Scotland Yard. If, like me, you like police procedurals, then Bellairs can be relied upon to give you a good one. Buy with confidence! As Ware rises to give his speech he shows signs of being unwell, collapsing just a short while later. Death In Dark Glasses. He wrote more than 50 books, most featuring the detective Inspector Littlejohn. So, Sir Gideon Ware dies in a very public way, and just about everyone around him had a reason to kill him. The poison took effect during the middle of a public luncheon where Ware had surrounded himself with people who disliked him. The plotting is methodical, unfolding the crime and its effects and eventual solution a piece at a time, allowing the reader to form and reform ideas and conclusions throughout.
I liked the mystery and the war time setting - but I thought it was over too soon and wasn't as keen on the section from the murderer's diary. Littlejohn is briefed briefly (without all the necessary details), and Hazard is assigned to help. Though he's a "quack", that mostly refers to his lack of official qualifications: the story makes it very clear he was an experienced and careful healer, and worthy of trust. Number eight in a series of books.
And I was surprised how deeply I found myself drawn into the lives and emotions of the characters - much more than in any previous book by Bellairs.
