Littlejohn is briefed briefly (without all the necessary details), and Hazard is assigned to help. Though he's a "quack", that mostly refers to his lack of official qualifications: the story makes it very clear he was an experienced and careful healer, and worthy of trust. And I was surprised how deeply I found myself drawn into the lives and emotions of the characters - much more than in any previous book by Bellairs.
