Grand Landscapes are certainly some of my favorite scenes to photograph. I often try a multitude of options in the field so that I can see what works best when I am ready to process photographs from a particular outing. There is a large parking area there for tourists and it's pretty busy during the day. The south end includes locations like Zabriskie Point with Manley Beacon, Twenty Mule Team Canyon, and Artists Palette located on Artists Drive. I used my Nikon Z7 and 24-70mm f4 Z lens, which does a great job of focusing up close. If you are not experienced at long desert drives on rugged gravel (and worse) roads, January 1 is not the best time for your first backcountry experience, particularly if you travel alone. Your go-to lens for landscapes may be a wide-angle lens, but Death Valley provides a handful of opportunities to use a longer focal length for detail and compression shots. The hike to the dunes is a longer one at 7 miles and should only be attempted during cooler temperatures as the heat can turn life-threatening in a hurry. We found Little Ubehebe to be the more photogenic of the two and were glad we made the extra effort to hike over to it!
